SOLAR COMPOSITION
Ace
The Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) is a spacecraft that studies a variety of particles that fly around the solar system--including the solar wind and particles from outside and within the solar system, as well as from distant regions of the galaxy. Its measurements help scientists determine where these fast-moving particles come from, how they are produced, and how they are sped up.
For example, by accurately measuring the chemical composition of the solar wind, ACE can help scientists deduce the composition of the solar atmosphere, including the outermost layer, which is called the corona. And by measuring the properties of high-energy ions in the solar wind, ACE can determine the scorching temperatures--which reach several millions of degrees--of the environment that produced the wind.
